It’s that time of year when the kids are heading back to school. Some reminders for the kids (and ourselves):
- Be kind to everyone. Make friends with the lonely ones; eat lunch with the new kid.
- Respect your teachers. They work hard and want the best for you.
- If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Think before you speak – words can hurt or heal.
- You aren’t better than anyone else and no one is better than you. You may excel at different things but it takes all kinds of talents and personalities to make the world a better place.
- Do your best whether it is in your studies or your activities. Study, do your homework, practice … you won’t regret the effort.
- Not every kid is cut out for college and not every career choice needs it. Consider trade school.
- Make good decisions. And help your friends to make good decisions.
- Don’t do drugs, don’t drink, and don’t smoke. These are all habits that will hurt your body and your spirit.
- Drive safely. Obey traffic laws, stop for school buses with flashing lights, move over or slow down for a police car, pull over for fire trucks and ambulances, be alert and know what’s going on around you, don’t text and drive. Call your parent if you are going to be late.
- Put down that phone. There is so much to see and experience but we miss it when our eyes are constantly on our phone. Talk to people in person, send a letter or card in the mail, ignore social media. Don’t text and drive.
